Google snippet preview

Type a title, URL and meta description. You get a preview of the Google result and a bar showing how close you are to the width where Google cuts text off.

Preview updates as you type. Meters show rendered pixel width against Google’s desktop cutoffs.

Title and description limits

Google truncates by pixel width, not character count. On desktop the title is cut near 580px and the description near 990px across two lines. Character counts are only a proxy: a title of narrow letters fits more than one full of capitals and Ws. This tool measures the rendered pixel width of your text in Google's own font stack, which is the measurement that decides truncation.

Writing titles

  • Put the important words first, because Google cuts from the end.
  • Narrow characters take up less width, so a title with numbers fits more than one with wide capitals.
  • Google sometimes rewrites titles. It is more likely to keep yours if it matches the query and the H1.
